Debt-free. Protected. Now we build the real cushion.

Step 1 gave you $1,500 to survive a Tuesday.

Step 4 gives you enough to survive a year that goes wrong.

This is the last layer of protection. After this, everything you build is yours to keep.

Why 3 to 6 months, and not 1?

Because getting retrenched in Singapore is not a 1-month problem.

The Ministry of Manpower tracks how quickly retrenched residents find work again. In its labour market report for the first quarter of 2026, 60.7% were re-employed within 6 months.

Read that the other way round.

  • Roughly 4 in 10 were still not re-employed after 6 months

  • Roughly 3 in 10 were still not re-employed after 1 year

And this is not a rare event. MOM's preliminary figures put 4,500 retrenchments in the second quarter of 2026 alone.

It isn't only about AI.

People assume the jobs are going to AI. MOM has been careful here - it does not publish AI-attributed retrenchment figures at all.

What it does publish is the reason given.

Between 60% and 70% of retrenchments since 2024 have been due to business restructuring, which MOM notes may include efficiency gains from AI and other technology, but also covers every other reason a company reorganises.

Restructuring doesn't care whether you were good at your job.

What the government gives you, and what it doesn't.

The SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme is real help.

It pays up to $6,000 over six months, front-loaded with $1,500 in the first month, if you lose your job involuntarily and meet the criteria. Nothing to scoff at.

However, put that next to the actual cost of living here. The Department of Statistics Household Expenditure Survey for 2023 puts average monthly household expenditure at $5,931.

So the scheme is worth about 1 month of expenses, spread across 6.

It is a supplement. It was never meant to be your plan.

So what does that make your number?

On that national average, three months is roughly $17,800 and six months roughly $35,600.

But use your number, not the average. Add up what your household actually spends in a month - housing, food, transport, insurance, the lot - and multiply.

Closer to 3 months if your income is stable and your household has 2 earners.

Closer to 6 if you're self-employed, single-income, or supporting parents.

What this fund is actually for.

Retrenchment. A parent's hospital stay. The year you need to leave a job that is grinding you down and you want to be able to leave without asking permission.

Once again, this is the last layer of protection. After this, everything you build is yours to keep.
